I love car racing games, and they sure cost a lot less than real racing. About a year ago our own Drew McPhee put me onto a game called rFactor, which is a SIM (Simulator) Car Racing game. The thing about this game first up is that it's very realistic. The second thing about it is the open platform that allows developers and users to customise every aspect of the game. This means the game has the potential for any vehicle, and any track.

I still found it rather difficult to play at the time. There were also only a few cars I liked. Move on a year and there are lots of cars I like, lots of BMW's, V8 Super Cars, and then there's a whole lot of Australian tracks too. But the real reason I was finally convinced to buy it was that our own developer Drew had teamed up with some mates to run an online drift racing series they dubbed Oversteer. The Oversteer team has now just released version 2 of their "mod" which is rFactor speak for a set of cars in it's basic form, and re branding the entire game in it's more complex form.

It was still very difficult to drive cars with the keyboard so I had to bite the bullet and get a racing wheel. I've been enjoying getting used to it and actually being able to drive around a track properly.

This is the best computer game ever for me. I am not into adventure or shoot 'em up games, and for under $200 I have the sim racing specialist hardware and a game with no limits as far as car racing goes, while ever people exist that want to develop their own cars we'll have new ones to race.
